From The Ground Up, 2007


While traveling in Istanbul and Damascus, I noticed myself often looking up to see the architecture of the mosques and people’s homes. Recognizing this shift in my own orientation, I began placing my camera on the ground, using the self-timer to create images. The resulting images capture these cities from an unusual point of view and also embody my own feelings of disorientation as a visitor navigating a foreign culture. The vulnerability of placing my camera on the ground and experimental nature of photographing without visually framing the images through the viewfinder invited interaction and curiosity from passersby. I am interested in new ways of imaging what we have seen so many times before. Using play in the creation of the images and looking up at others as opposed to looking down, this series welcomes and acknowledges our cultural similarities and differences.
