Out Of The Blue, 2016


While visiting Japan and in residence at Studio Kura in Itoshima, I set out to explore art making as a contemplative practice. My intention was to cultivate personal and social awareness through a creative daily practice.

Prior to arriving to the residency, I visited Hiroshima and was deeply moved and inspired by the image of the paper crane and its symbolism of hope for peace. I learned of the senbazuru legend, read about Sadako Sasaki and folded my first paper crane while sitting in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.


The practice of origami requires both patience and presence. Inherent in origami is the act of folding and unfolding. Working with cyanotype, a non-silver photographic process originated in the 1840’s, and origami (specifically the folding and unfolding of the paper crane) these images incorporate process, time, reflection and contemplation for peace.
